Family and relationships
A change of faith or practice never happens to one person alone. Some of these guests had parents who were glad for them. Others lost relationships they still miss. They describe the conversations as they happened.
How do people tell their family they are becoming a Sikh?
The guests' experiences differ: some families were supportive and some were not. Bishan Singh, then 17, made changes one at a time and talked about Sikhi constantly. He says his parents were concerned at first but open.
Haneet Kaur told her mum alone about her husband’s change, then confirmed her own by phone. She says her family then stopped speaking to her. Her husband, Joga Singh, waited two months, then messaged his sister, and says his family also cut contact. Her caution is to be aware that family may stop talking to you, and not to rush. His is to think first about your age, money, housing and safety.
